Clearstone: A modern solution for an ancient marble

It took a while for this Minnesota homeowner to choose the perfect Italian marble for her kitchen renovation; however, when it came to selecting the right product to permanently protect it, Clearstone Coating was the only one to give her priceless peace of mind. Quarried in the Italian city of Carrara, which is in the northernmost tip of modern-day Tuscany, Carrara Marble was used for some of Ancient Rome’s most striking buildings including the Pantheon, as well as iconic Renaissance sculptures such as Michelangelo’s David.

Contemporary architects, builders and interior designers around the globe continue to be enamoured by Carrara Marble’s fine, feathery veining, long-lasting beauty and timeless elegance. As do homeowners, like Dr Lynn Jones, who decided to use this luxurious material when renovating her kitchen after a burst supply water line irreparably damaged a large section of her house.

“We had seen Carrara Marble on an online design website, so decided to use it for the new countertops and kitchen splashback,” explains Dr Jones from her home in St Paul, Minnesota. “During our research, we quickly learned that we would need to protect the marble from staining and acid etching, and that’s how we came across Clearstone.”

Developed in Australia and available in the United States exclusively through Clearstone Coating – a proud member of the Marble Institute of America – this specially formulated, clear resin based, polyester coating system can be applied to many types of natural stones including marble, onyx, limestone and sandstone.

“I love the beauty of marble and I wanted it to look new all the time and, for me, Clearstone was the only option,” she says. “If you’re going to invest in something like Carrara Marble, you need to protect it.”

Following the applicator’s instructions to the letter – “I was obsessed with it!” – Dr Jones allowed Clearstone to cure for the full 30 days, being careful not to place hot dishes on the surface and always using a cutting board.

Choosing the high gloss finish rather than the honed option, she says Clearstone was put to the ultimate test: Thanksgiving.

“Actually, we’ve had three or four gatherings since Clearstone was applied, where the house was filled with people, and I did not worry about the countertops one little bit,” says Dr Jones. “It wears, and uses, perfectly. There’s no discoloration, or etching, and all you need to do is wipe the surface with a damp cloth. It’s that easy.

“My beautiful marble benchtop looks exactly the same as the day Clearstone was applied to it,” she says. “It exudes a beautiful warmth that you wouldn’t get from any other product. It’s just like looking at a piece of artwork – it really is that stunning.”

As Clearstone Coating Vice President Shari Mitchell explains, Clearstone Coating is the only product on the market that provides a permanent solution to natural stone protection.

“Knowing that Clearstone Coating has a ten-year warranty – the only natural stone sealer or coating to do so – means that homeowners like Dr Jones who love to cook and entertain, can do so without worrying that a slice of lemon, drop of cola, or red wine spill on their natural stone benchtop won’t ruin their investment,” she says.

“Countertops and Clearstone are as beautiful as the day they were installed. I really love using them! Thanksgiving Day we had a house full of folks, lots of food everywhere…and they look like new! ”
